Brief history of the Tres Cubano
The Cuban tres is a chordophone instrument, derived from the guitar that emerged on the island of Cuba, more specifically in the rural areas of eastern Cuba. One of the oldest references to this instrument is that of the carnivals of Santiago de Cuba in 1892, when Nené Manfugás came down from the fields of Baracoa with “a rustic instrument of three double strings and a wooden box called tres”. However, ethnologist Fernando Ortiz maintains that the tres is not a Cuban invention and that very similar instruments already existed in medieval Spain.
