A little history of the Ngoni
The Ngoni is an instrument that is part of a large family of traditional harps that is widespread in sub-Saharan West Africa. It is tuned in pentatonic scales and is traditionally called Donso Ngoni (hunter’s Ngoni).
The Donso Ngoni has six strings. In the fifties strings were added creating the Kamele`Ngoni or Kamelo`Ngoni (Ngoni of young people).
The Donso Ngoni could be one of the oldest melodic instruments, still alive, of this great region of Africa.
It belongs to hunter/warrior societies of animist beliefs.
It is an instrument surrounded by great mysticism. Traditionally, among other functions, it accompanies the prayers, songs and words of musicians. It should be understood that we cannot define them only as musicians since their functions are not really aesthetic in the western sense of the word. They are people who know secrets directly related to the protection and success of the warrior or hunter.
The Kamele`Ngoni (more than six strings), like the model presented on this page, is much more related to modern musical aesthetics. It differs from its predecessor not only in the number of strings but also in its functions. The music and culture of the Ngoni (as well as other traditional African melodic instruments) was in great part the generator of the blues.
Today it is an instrument known worldwide and increasingly sought after by musicians of all styles, both professional and amateur.
