Kultrún Mapuche – Traditional Construction
Kultrún Mapuche – Traditional Construction
It consists of a direct beating membranophone used by the Mapuche people. It is a ceremonial drum, the most important musical instrument of the Mapuche culture, used by the machi (shaman, healer, sorcerer) for religious and cultural rituals, as well as during the Ngillatun rogation (annual fertility rite).
It is a hemispherical membranophone. It measures approximately between 35 and 40 cm of superior diameter and a height of 12 to 15 cm. Its body is made of canelo, laurel, lenga or lingue wood, cut in winter so that it does not split. It is built by hollowing out a trunk to give the sound box the shape of an open or concave cone, in the form of a bellows. Subsequently, a patch of lamb or horsehide is attached covering the mouth, tightened with leather ties embracing the body of the drum.
It is played in two ways: held in the hand and struck with one stick or resting on the ground and struck with two sticks.
In the Mapuche cosmovision, the kultrun or cultrun represents half of the universe or the world in its semi-spherical shape; in the patch are represented the four cardinal points, which are the omnipotent powers of Ngenechen (God), dominator of the universe, which are represented by two lines as a cross and its ends branch into three more lines, representing the legs of the choyke (rhea); within the quarters that are divided by the lines described above, the four seasons of the year are drawn.
