A brief history of the Colombian Gaita
Aerophone musical instrument from the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. Its origin goes back to the original Koguis and Arhuacos peoples, who used it for their rituals and called it Kuisi. Then, with the arrival of the colonizers and the African slaves, Colombia went through a process of cultural mixture, where the Colombian Gaita (so called by the Spaniards) together with the drums of the African descendants gave rise to the cumbia and various Afro-Colombian rhythms.
The also called “Chuana”, is a pre-Columbian instrument from the Colombian Caribbean area. It is perhaps the only indigenous instrument of that territory, and represents a very important heritage as the progenitor of Cumbia, which has influenced the whole world in its journey of expansion. It is said that this genre was born from the mixture of the African, who brought the drums to America, the Indian with his bagpipe, and the Spanish or white man who also made his contribution in the language, dances and costumes. Originally it is a stick of cardon or pitaya with holes, and a head that functions as an embouchure that is made only by hand with a duck feather and a mixture of beeswax and charcoal. Generating a unique and particular timbre that captivates.
These bagpipes are played in pairs of bagpipes (one female and one male) with five holes in the first and two in the second. Traditionally, the rhythms played are: cumbia, gaita, porro, puya and merengue. Accompanied by the Colombian maraca.
About the way of interpretation or execution
It is played in pairs, one person plays the female bagpipe, which has 5 holes, 4 of which are covered, carrying the melodic line. The other person blows the male bagpipe, with 2 holes, accompanying the female bagpipe with the fundamental notes of the melody and at the same time carrying the rhythmic march with the maraca in the other hand.
