Peruvian Box
Percussive Idiófono
Resonating bodies, from Cuba, Peru, America; Spain, Europe; African origin.
Brief history
The cajita is a percussion musical instrument developed in Peru and is part of the identity of the Afro-Peruvian communities of the central coast. The Afro-Peruvian rhythmic cajita is one of the contributions of the Afro-descendant population to the musical tradition and culture of Peru, which is why it was declared Peruvian National Heritage on December 28, 2007 and its law published on January 13, 2008.
Its origin is related to the collection of money in churches. Thus, when this ingenious little box was transformed into an instrument, a stick was added to play on the sides and on the front of the box. The lid, which is on the top, opens and closes at the same time. Just as you play the outside of the box, and close and open it to make it sound, you can also see the musicians opening the lid and tapping the stick on the inside of the box.
